Tribute to the Big Man

I recently heard the news of the passing of Clarence “Big Man” Clemons, the saxophone player for the E Street Band. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of photographing the Big Man playing with Bruce Springsteen and the rest of the E Street Band at the Izod Center in New Jersey, during what would be his last tour.

This was my first time seeing the band live and what really stood out was the way the players connected not only with the audience, but with each other. You could see from their interaction on stage that they still genuinely enjoyed playing music together, even after most of them had been performing together for over 30 years.

Clarence was a commanding presence on stage. His saxophone playing brought a power to the band’s performance that I hadn’t appreciated before experiencing it in person. I feel fortunate that I was able to see it while the Big Man was still with us.

Below are a some photos of Clarence.
